He vied for power in northern India. In 1555 he fought a battle against Islam Shah's successor, Adil Shah.〔 In that battle Muhammad Shah was defeated and killed by Adil Shah's general, Hemu.〔 Adil Shah then appointed Shahbaz Khan as the new governor of Bengal.〔
